Toby, can you explain what kind of prep work you did to create the 3D spine and the flat casts? And what kinds of things we need to think about before we set off on our iron-clad adventure?

Well, it was a case of thinking of the overall form - and then breaking it down into the biggest individual element that could be cast - bearing in mind of course the 'how' of getting the whole thing put together! The mold for this one looked very much like an airfix kit - with eac individual rib and vertebrae joined to e cettral pour sprue, and each exiting with a vent sprue

Just as some further info - the ribs and vertebrae were created using polysterene and a hot wire (I used wall insulation foam) as this one was done as a 'lost' pour - ie the formers were actually imbedded into the mold - however, given that the individual shapes were quite simple, it could quite easily have been down as a simple two part mold - were each piece takes half an impression in either side of a two part mold. Hope that makes sence! I'm sure I'm not using the right terminology - I'll see if I can find some links to some proper sites to get the gen! ;-)
